Red Light Therapy and Women’s Health

Written by

Usually, when it comes to talking about red light therapy and women’s health, the conversation easily slides toward rejuvenating effects. Therefore, the focus is on red light therapy masks, skin tightening, collagen production. All of these are somewhat cosmetic applications of red light therapy devices.

There is so much more that a woman can do with her red light therapy device than tighten her skin and fight wrinkles. Red light therapy can be used as a safe way to energize your cells. Energizing cells with a red light therapy device means giving all the cells in the body the energy they need. In that way, they get what they need to perform their jobs better.

This energy from red light is distributed throughout the body in order to heal it and improve its wellness levels.

There are some conditions that mainly or exclusively affect women. Here is the list of such conditions and how red light therapy can help with them.

Period pain

Primary period pain happens due to the cramps and spasms of the uterus during the cycle. These spasms are a normal occurrence. However, they can be unpleasant and even debilitating for some women.

A study conducted by Jin-Min Lee and  Kye-Ha Kim in Korea showed that red light therapy can reduce the intensity and duration of menstrual pain. They compared a group of women who were treated by a red light therapy belt 20 minutes a day. The treatment lasted for several days before their period. The study showed a significant reduction in pain than the group of women who were using over-the-counter painkillers.

Fertility

Infertility treatments are always based on the cause of this condition. In many cases, female infertility stems from some of the following factors:

  • Endometriosis
  • Blockages of the fallopian tube
  • Surgery scars
  • PCOS

One of the good sides of red light therapy is that it doesn’t necessarily address just one issue. Therefore, it can be effective even if the cause is not 100% determined. It energizes the body to be able to solve any issue it experiences. That is why in this situation, when the cause of infertility may be complex, red light therapy can seem like a logical, blanket solution.

A Japanese study showed that red light therapy can successfully increase the chances of pregnancy with women that couldn’t conceive for years. Over 20% of severely infertile women conceived and maintained pregnancy after red light therapy treatment.

It may be too soon to say that red light therapy is infertility treatment. However, there is a significant amount of evidence that shows that it might improve the blood supply to the ovum and the entire reproductive system. Therefore, red light might be increasing the chances of conception.

Improving fertility with red light therapy is challenging. If you miss the correct dosage or wavelength, you will not be able to reach the ovaries and help improve their function. However, FlexBeam uses a wavelength that has been proven to penetrate deep enough. Therefore, it may help the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the rest of the reproductive system to improve the state of the tissues.

Pelvic floor resilience

This fairly common health problem affects many women, but given its nature, it can sometimes be left ignored. However, that doesn’t make it any less disruptive and it can reduce the quality of life significantly.

Pelvic floor resilience can be damaged due to age, but also childbirth. Dr. Zulia Frost lists the following symptoms of pelvic floor disorders in her presentation “Pelvic Floor Pain and FlexBeam”:

  • Stress incontinence
  • Urge incontinence, dysuria, frequency, loss of bladder control
  • Loss of bowel control, constantly needing to go to the toilet, or constipation.
  • Finding it difficult to empty the bladder or bowel
  • Accidentally passing wind
  • A prolapse, vaginal or rectal
  • Pain in the pelvic or lower back area, or genitals or rectum that feels like a pelvic muscular spasm
  • Painful intercourse for women

The pain occurs when the muscles in the uterus (womb) contract or tighten and often feel like cramping or heaviness in the pelvic area, lower back or stomach. Despite it being a typical add-on of getting your period, if the pain is severe, it could be a sign of endometriosis.

Red Light Therapy and Women’s Health: How Can it Help?

According to Dr. Zulia Frost’s findings, here is how red light therapy can help:

  • The use of red light therapy increases the blood flow and energy in the pelvis area, removing blood stasis.
  • Increased blood circulation promotes muscular relaxation.
  • Reduced blood pressure leads to a reduction of anxiety and brain fog.
  • Reduction in uterus soft musculature spam.

Bowel inflammation and gut spasms.

  • Increased blood flow promotes better removal of toxins.
  • Through regulation of the circadian rhythm, there is hormonal and neurotransmitters regulation including serotonin, leptin and ghrelin, cortisol, estrogen, etc.
  • Vagus nerve modulation (connecting the gut and brain).
  • Modulation of the microbiome. The microbes in the gut are sensitive to light energy and respond to light energy with differences in growth, migration, and proliferation of the different species.

Osteoporosis

The risk of osteoporosis and osteopenia increases in menopausal women. The risk factors increase because both estrogen and progesterone levels drop. Normally, androgen would rise, as these hormones have antagonistic functions. However, when menopause occurs, all hormonal levels drop. When this happens, it highly increases the risk of osteoporosis and concurrent conditions.

Red light therapy can help regulate melatonin production which regulates the circadian rhythm. Namely, regulated sleep patterns are essential for hormonal balance. Without well-balanced hormones, it is next to impossible to decrease the risk factors of osteoporosis.

“Another hormone that increases dopamine levels in the central nervous system is testosterone. This hormone is essential for women’s health, especially in menopause. It is necessary for muscle and bone strength and cognitive function.”

Biohacking Women’s Health with Red Light Therapy

There are many other conditions that predominantly affect women, especially at a certain age. Some of them include:

Symptoms of each of these conditions can be alleviated to some degree by red light therapy. After all, the holistic and systemic approach to healing is the basis of red light therapy. Therefore, it can be beneficial, especially when it comes to complex problems that have more than one cause.

Improving general fitness and health levels can make women’s bodies more resilient and more prepared to fight off any negative effects of hormonal disbalances or aging. Red light therapy and women’s health make a great match.

While FlexBeam is not a medical device, testimonials speak for themselves. Many women have reported significant improvement in pain management, hormone levels, mood, and energy levels.
